Jol leaves Fulham in the lurch

May 02, 2010 - Nijmegen, NETHERLANDS - epa02140346 Ajax coach Martin Jol reacts as despite the 1-4 victory over NEC 02 May 2010 in Nijmegen, Ajax will not win the Dutch soccer championship. FC Twente won the final match of the season against NAC Breda with 0-2 to secure the title for the first time.

Martin Jol has left Fulham in the lurch, and without a manager, with just three weeks until the start of the new Premier League season.

Jol yesterday did a complete u-turn, and will remain Ajax manager after agreeing in principle to join Fulham a few days before. Jol had agreed personal terms with the West London club, however after meeting with the Ajax Board, in the last couple of days, he has decided to stay in charge of the Dutch side.

The Ajax Board has been able to convince him that transfer funds will be made available, and that key players like Luis Suarez will not be sold. Some critics will argue that this was the result Jol wanted all along, but whatever his motives it now really leaves Fulham in desperate need of finding a new manager, and fast.

With their opening match against Bolton just three weeks away a shortlist of new targets has quickly been put together, which includes former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and Cardiff boss David Jones. Mark Hughes seems the obvious choice, however, as he is keen to get back into management after 9 months away from the game. Alan Curbishly is another name which might be on the list of possible candidates.

What’s your view? Who would be best man to take charge at Fulham?
