Following a dismal display in South Africa, which saw his team record their worst ever World Cup defeat, should Fabio Capello now resign as England manager?
The Football Association is set to review Fabio Capello’s position over the coming weeks, and the thought is that there will be no knee jerk reaction to England’s early exit from the World Cup. Capello is receiving plenty of backing from FA Board members, which suggests that they will end up sticking with the Italian.
The main problem the FA faces is that Capello is paid £6m a year, so relieving him of his duties will seriously hit company profits, which are already suffering from relaying the Wembley pitch every couple of weeks. Unfortunately for the FA, they removed a clause in his contract that allowed either party to terminate it during a two week window after the World Cup had finished.
The other problem the FA faces is finding a suitable replacement. There would be pressure to hire an English manager, and with Roy Hodgson joining Liverpool yesterday the only real candidate would be Harry Redknapp. The FA will be unlikely to want Harry as England manager, however, mainly because he would really shake things up at the Organisation.
The 2010 England World Cup campaign was a disaster from start to finish. England failed to top the easiest group in the competition, and were dumped out in the first round knockout by old rivals Germany. The decision whether to keep Capello in his post will not be based on the performances on the pitch, however. If it was then no discussion would be needed, he would have already been sacked.
What’s your view? Should Capello remain as England Manager?
