After an abysmal World Cup display by the England team, Fabio Capello needs to do the right thing, stand down.

No one can argue that the 2010 World Cup campaign for the England team has been anything other that an unmitigated disaster, from start to finish. The team played awful football, failed to top the easiest group in the competition, and crashed out with the worst ever defeat in English World Cup history.

Fabio Capello must take a lot of the blame for this state of affairs. His job was to get the best out of a talented squad of players, and he failed to do so. He needed to motivate, install confidence, and most importantly pick the right players, in the right positions. He failed on all counts.

His job was to guide the team to a semi-final, which would have been considered a success by most watching fans and pundits alike. Although he may point to the injury to Rio Ferdinand, and the tiredness of the remaining England players, these excuses do not cut the mustard.

The German players have played more matches than their English counterparts this season, and although the loss of Rio Ferdinand was a big blow, it should not have stood in the way of progression to the later stages of this tournament.

So Capello has failed in all areas of this World Cup campaign, and now must do the right thing and stand down. England need  to build for the future, after the “Golden Generation” of footballing talent has been squandered for the fourth and final time.
