Eljero Elia transformed a drab Dutch performance against Denmark in their first World Cup match, and the Dutch Flyer is set to make a big impression on the tournament.
Elia came on for Van der Vaart after 67 minutes with Holland lucky to be ahead in the game following an own goal by Dan Agger. He really looked impressive, as he bombed down the left wing, and was really unlucky not to score when put through on goal with time running out. Elia stroked the ball passed the Danish keeper only to see the shot rebound off the post for Kuyt to tap it in and seal the game.
Elia joined Hamburger SV from FC Twente in July 2009 for a fee of €8.5m and quickly became a big hit with the home fans, helping the German side to reach the semi-final of the Europa Cup. Elia made 23 appearances for Hamburger last season, scoring 5 goals.
A whole host of Premier League clubs are queuing up to sign the left winger, include Spurs, Liverpool and Man Utd, however his price tag is likely to increase significantly if the Dutchman continues to put in great performances for Holland. Don’t be surprised to see Man Utd step up the chase when the World Cup ends, as Sir Alex Ferguson is really keen to find an out-and-out left winger.
