ENGLAND V CAMEROON GASCOIGNE

With the World Cup just a few months away Classic Corner is now devoted to looking back at some of the great matches from World Cups gone by and we start here with England v Cameroon in the Quarter Final of Italia 90.

Cameroon were having a great tournament beating Argentina 1-0 in the opening game and with Roger Milla in fine form they were looking to become the first African side to reach the Semi Finals of a World Cup.

England, on the other hand, were having a difficult tournament and only just qualified from the Group stages. They needed a last minute winner from David Platt to get to this Quarter Final match and Bobby Robson was looking to become the first England Manager to lead his team to the Semi Finals of the World since Alf Ramsey in 1966.

The Match

Looking at the Video you might say Cameroon were pretty unlucky that night in Naples as England rode their luck, especially in Extra Time. But you have to admire Lineker’s ability to score from the spot under great pressure, twice.

Pay particular attention in the build up to the second England penalty however, and see Lineker falling well before he gets challenged and he even leaves a cheeky leg trialing just to make sure there’s contact…
